Pål Virik Nilsen got a strong 3rd place during Sunday's World Cup round of Formula 2 boats which was held in Stockholm.
Virik Nilsen had the fourth-best start position after Friday's qualifying. A total of 23 boats took part in the final heat that went over 32 hard laps in an intense course with a lot of wind and waves. It was therefore the most experienced drivers who dominated the race from start to finish.
Pal took the start and led into the first corner with approx two boat lengths. The rules of boating says the boat on Pole has first right of inner line around the first buoy. Therefor Pal had to delay the bend and make room for Erik Stark and three others inside. Erik and Pal ran side by side on the next leg and Erik had enough once the benefit of inner track. That made a smal gap between the two leading boats. After fifteen laps the first accident happened and it became a restart at speed. Pal was okay out on the re-start but Swede Jonas Andersson managed to push ahead in the first turn after the restart. The rest of the race Pal was hard pushed from behind but refused to give up the podium position. A new accident just two laps before the finish line caused the red flag to come.. Then Pål endes in an impressive third place in the first World Cup round of seven this season.
As a victory
- This is certainly as a victory. I am very happy with the whole week here in Stockholm. There has been a lot of driving and I have been in the top virtually all training sessions, qualifying and the race now. That i won the start gives a lot of confidence before the coming races. Competition is impressive in this class, so to succeed in this company, I am proud of. If we adjust the boat, propeller and myself, I am convinced that we are on top of the podium once said a delighted Pal Virik Nilsen after the podium prezentation.
The next World Cup round in the Formula 2 circuit racing yesterday in Baku, Azerbaijan June 6 to 7.
