Round 2 and 3 of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships will take place in the tropical waters of North Queensland over back to back weekend events in Mackay and Townsville on the 25th and 26th June and the 2nd and 3rd July respectively.
Winter conditions in North Queensland are tipped to provide perfect conditions for the Offshore Boats making the trip north to compete in the Northern most events on the Australian Offshore Superboat 2011 Calendar. Typically calm waters during this time of the year in North Queensland will be welcomed relief after the extreme conditions experienced by the competitors in round 1 in Newcastle back in May.
Round 2 in Mackay on the 25th & 26th June will be staged at the Mackay Marina and will have a Marine theme with QLD Marine bringing their renowned Tinnie & Tackle show to Mackay to coincide with the racing. With plenty of entertainment both on and off the water, round 2 will have something for everyone. QLD Marine will have a wide variety of boats and fishing gear and will also have a great area for the kids, which will teach them how to cast a net and have a big touch tank full of marine life. The Offshore boats will head out on Saturday at 2pm for a pole position shoot-out and finals racing on Sunday will start at 11am and 1pm. The pits will be open from early on in the day providing the general public with a close up view of the multi-million dollar boats. The whole event is free and there is plenty of parking, so it’ll be a nice weekend by the water for everyone.
Round 3 in Townsville on the 2nd & 3rd July will be staged out of the Breakwater Marina with racing taking place along the front of The Strand. This will allow the general public a front row seat to watch the racing, which will take place at 2pm on Saturday and 11am and 1pm on Sunday. The V8’s on water will act as a prelude to the V8’s on land at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 V8 Supercar event a week later and is proving to be a week of high adrenalin entertainment for all those enthusiasts of power and high octane racing. The home team Mazlin Electrical will be out to gain home water advantage in the 1000 class field and is set to be a thrilling race against current leaders Mackay’s The Good Guys.
The North Queensland leg of the Series will provide great conditions, for both the competitors and the spectators. Mackay’s Friers Offshore Racing Team in their number 6 Maritimo Good Guys Boat will be out to stamp their authority on the field over both legs whist Global Racing, Team 3 and Australian Wholesale Vehicles Offshore Racing will make a welcome return following delays to the series opener. After a turbulent race in Newcastle, Aus 1 champions Mustang with Tom Barry Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen will be back on the water hoping to put some solid points on the table and defend their title against its stable mate Maritimo. In the 600 class, SUV Dodge Ram will also be looking for a solid performance against Berwicks, Kwozzy and Scaracen after experiencing mechanical issues in round 1 in Newcastle. The 400 class will as always be a competitive race with leaders FGI hoping to hold off Hogs Breath Offshore Racing in what is always a great dual.
With the events conveniently held during the school holiday’s, why not make a weekend of it and come along to one or both of the North Queensland legs of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships and experience the thrill of V8 racing along one of the world’s best coastlines. With both events being free community events, it’s a great way to spend a weekend away for the whole family.
